LJB Mourns the Loss of Founder, Bill Lockwood

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of LJB founder Bill Lockwood, who died on May 27 at the age of 82. We are immensely thankful for the legacy of design excellence and innovation he has left for LJB, as well as the core values of our firm—integrity, quality and service—that he instilled at the beginning and which have remained for more than 50 years.

Bill Lockwood founded W.D. Lockwood Consulting Engineers in 1966 and it became Lockwood, Jones and Beals, Inc. (LJB) in 1972. Continuing with his entrepreneurial spirit, Bill went on to establish other companies, including CON/STEEL Tilt-Up Systems (1982), CON/SPAN Bridge Systems (1985), and BridgeTek, LLC (1994). Bill fostered a spirit of innovation at LJB throughout his career, and his ability to develop new technologies and bring them to market led to 17 patents.

Today, LJB continues to encourage innovation, and attract high achievers, creative thinkers and great communicators—just like Bill. His excitement for new ideas lives on in our staff, with our involvement in unique services like fall protection, tilt-up concrete structural design, composite bridge design, and innovative intersection design. All these services stem from the engineering practice that Bill loved and respected so much, but they extend the concepts to create new ways to meet client needs.

Although it’s been a number of years since Bill has actively worked at LJB, he continued to be a part of the LJB family by attending holiday parties, summer picnics and other company events. In LJB’s headquarters office in Dayton, Ohio, we named our board room “The Lockwood” in honor of Bill, and we prominently highlight his commitment to innovation and integrity with a plaque on the wall (shown in the slideshow below).

While many know Bill Lockwood for his engineering expertise, creative mind and technical capability, we also know how committed Bill was to serving others—through mentoring students and entrepreneurs, establishing scholarships, and giving generously.

As our founder, chairman, mentor, and friend, Bill has left an indelible legacy on LJB—and in turn on the clients and communities we serve today. We will strive to continue the amazing example and legacy that Bill has left for each of us.
