For the past few years, LJB has been involved in promoting and applying the concept of complete streets to deliver safe and accessible streets to the communities we serve. People inside and outside LJB have asked why we are so passionate in our quest to accommodate all users in our street designs. The simple answer is that it’s the right thing to do, but the root of our passion for helping create safe, walkable, livable streets goes deeper.
From a technical perspective, complete streets design concepts can be an effective way to help our clients leverage their existing assets with minimal investment, while improving safety and promoting economic development options. This approach serves as a springboard for building safe, healthy, and vibrant communities, which fulfills our core purpose—to improve the quality of life.
In the words of Jane Jacobs, author and activist for urban renewal, “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” Helping communities design and implement complete streets is just one of the ways that we can be part of creating great places to live and work, thereby living out our core purpose. When the traveling public—regardless of age, ability or mode – has safe and accessible streets to use, we have done our job both as designers and community citizens.
